Troubleshooting Canvas Design Studio
Fixes for common issues — the block not appearing, gallery detection in inline mode, slow first background removal, template limits, watermarks, and preflight warnings.
The issues merchants actually hit, roughly in order of frequency — with fixes.
The "Design your own" button isn't showing#
- Confirm the Design Studio block is added to the product page template in the theme editor and the template is published.
- Check the product actually has a template bound to it (Products page in the app). No template, no button.
- If you enabled "Hide 'Design your own' button", that's working as intended — the theme's Add-to-Cart button is now the entry point.
Inline mode isn't replacing the gallery image#
Inline mode auto-detects your theme's gallery element, and most themes work out of the box. For unusual themes:
Fix: set the Gallery selector override in the block settings to a CSS selector matching your theme's main product image container. Your theme developer (or a quick inspect-element) can identify it in seconds.
Background removal is slow the first time#
Expected. The AI model runs entirely in the customer's browser and downloads on first use — after that it's cached and takes seconds. If it's disabled entirely, check your plan: background removal needs Starter or above, with monthly allowances per plan (see Plans & Billing).
"Template limit reached" when saving#
Published template counts are plan-gated: Free 1 · Starter 5 · Growth/Scale unlimited. Delete an unused template or upgrade. Adopted starter templates count toward the limit too.
There's a watermark on the design preview#
That's the Free plan's "Powered by Design Studio" mark on the cart preview only — production files are never watermarked. Any paid plan removes it.
No PDF / SVG / cut-path files on an order#
Production exports (PDF, vector SVG, cut path) are generated on Starter and above. On Free you still get the production PNG. See Production Files & Preflight.
A customer says they can't submit their design#
Preflight warns about safe-zone violations, too-small text, and bleed coverage — and required fields must be filled before submit. The warning text tells the customer exactly what to fix. If a template triggers false positives (e.g. a deliberate edge-bleed effect), revisit its bleed/safe-zone settings.
Customer uploads look wrong on engraving products#
If colour photos are arriving for a single-colour process, set auto image filters (threshold or grayscale) on the template so every upload converts on arrival — see Images & Background Removal.
An order has a design, but usage didn't count / counted oddly#
Usage counts paid orders only, once per order line, idempotently — drafts, abandoned carts, and webhook retries never inflate it. The Billing page shows the live count for the current cycle.
