Templates & the Starter Library
Build templates in build mode, adopt from ~140 professional starter designs, set per-template print specs, and bind templates to Shopify products and variants.
Templates are the starting point of every customer design — the artwork, the editable fields, the print specs, and the rules, all in one unit you attach to products.
Two ways to get a template#
Adopt from the starter library#
The Studio Templates section holds around 140 professionally designed templates, ready to adopt into My Templates with one click:
- Labels — address and product labels in multiple widths
- Bottles & jars — hot sauce, beer, jar and candle wrap labels
- Shapes — circles, ovals, rectangles, and rounded squares in size runs
- Stamps — square, rectangular, and round rubber-stamp layouts (including curved perimeter text), plus clothing and professional-practice stamps
Adopted templates behave like your own: bind them to products, tweak them, set constraints.
Build your own#
Create template opens the studio in build mode — the same editor customers use, plus authoring powers:
- Everything is editable, no restrictions
- Add image placeholders with labels ("Logo", "Photo")
- Mark any object as customer-editable: text (they edit the words), image (they swap the picture), or visibility (they toggle it on/off) — everything else stays locked
- Give editable fields a form label, mark them required, and cap max length / max lines so the design never breaks
- Set the template's own print specs — width and height (inches, cm or mm), bleed, safe zone — overriding your shop defaults where needed
Template settings#
Each template carries:
| Setting | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Name | What you see in the admin |
| Customer name | Friendlier label shown to shoppers (falls back to name) |
| Dimensions | Physical width × height |
| Bleed / safe zone | Per-template print overrides |
| Constraints | Locking, allowed fonts/colours, tool visibility, customer mode — see Lockdown & Customer Modes |
| Default flag | Preferred template when several match a product |
Binding templates to products#
Attach templates from either direction:
- Templates page → assign products (or a specific variant, so "Small / Red" can carry different artwork than "Large / Blue")
- Products page → see every shop product with its template count, click through to add or remove
When a customer opens a product with several bound templates, they pick from a template chooser; with one, it loads straight in.
Plan limits#
| Plan | Published templates |
|---|---|
| Free | 1 |
| Starter | 5 |
| Growth / Scale | Unlimited |
One good locked-down template usually outperforms five open ones — customers decide faster when the design is 90% done and they just add their name. Start restrictive; loosen only where customers ask for more.
